Tattoo in Summer: The Best Tips for Sun, Holidays and Aftercare

Every year, as soon as temperatures rise, we hear the same question: Can you even get a tattoo in summer? The short answer is yes. The slightly longer answer is yes, but you probably shouldn't head straight to the beach, jump into a pool, or spend hours in the sun with a fresh tattoo.

Still, the myth persists that getting tattooed in summer is always a bad idea. In reality, thousands of tattoos are done every year during the warmer months. With proper aftercare, a tattoo heals just as well in summer as it does in winter.

Can You Get a Tattoo in Summer?

Absolutely. Tattoo studios don't close from June to September every year. The key difference isn't the tattoo session itself, but the healing process. A fresh tattoo is essentially an open wound that needs time to recover. During this period, direct sunlight, chlorine, salt water, and excessive sweating can make healing more difficult.

That doesn't mean you need to postpone your appointment. It simply means that your new tattoo deserves a little extra attention during the first few weeks.

Why Sun and Fresh Tattoos Don't Mix

The good news: summer and tattoos are perfectly compatible. The bad news: the sun doesn't care how amazing your new tattoo looks. During the healing phase, your skin needs some extra protection.

A fresh tattoo and direct sunlight should keep a little distance at first. Sometimes healthy boundaries are the best solution.

Direct sunlight can further irritate the skin and slow down the healing process. Colours may also fade more quickly or heal unevenly if the skin hasn't fully regenerated. That's why tattoo artists generally recommend keeping fresh tattoos out of direct sunlight during the first few weeks. Even SPF 50 sunscreen doesn't automatically make a healing tattoo sun-safe. While your tattoo is still healing, avoiding direct sun exposure is always the better option.

Tattoo Before or After Your Holiday?

This question is often more important than the season itself. If your holiday involves beaches, pools, sunbathing, and spending all day in swimwear, it's usually better to wait until after your trip before getting tattooed.

On the other hand, if you're planning a city break or know you won't spend every day in the sun, getting tattooed beforehand is often completely fine. If you want to play it safe, schedule your tattoo a few weeks before travelling or simply wait until you return. That way, your skin has time to heal properly, and you won't have to wonder whether that spontaneous swim in the sea is really a good idea.

Sweating, Sports and Hot Weather

More good news: sweating alone won't ruin your tattoo. Your body doesn't stop functioning just because you've got fresh ink under your skin.

That said, it's best to avoid intense physical activity during the first few days after your appointment. Activities that create a lot of friction or constant contact with the tattooed area can make healing unnecessarily difficult. A relaxed walk through Berlin? No problem. Running a marathon the day after your appointment? Probably not the best idea.

Proper Tattoo Aftercare During Summer

The most important rule is simple: fewer adventures, more patience. Keep your tattoo clean, wear loose-fitting clothing, and give your skin the time it needs to recover. Avoid direct sunlight, long swims, and anything that puts unnecessary stress on freshly tattooed skin.

The biggest question usually isn't the season itself, but what's planned for the following weeks. A beach holiday right after your appointment is far more challenging than the heat.

Most tattoo problems aren't caused by summer. They happen because people forget that fresh tattoos need time to heal. If you take aftercare seriously, there's no reason you can't achieve an amazing result, even in the middle of July.

Summer Is Still Tattoo Season

Getting tattooed in summer isn't a problem. The season doesn't determine how good your tattoo will turn out. What matters is how you treat it during the healing process. If you're willing to give your tattoo a little extra care and attention, there's absolutely nothing stopping you from getting new ink when it's 30 degrees outside.
